I was listening to Pulp in the car during my swerve over to Wienerschnitzel for my poor man's unhealthy lunch and suddenly realized that while the original is a poppy dance anthem of wonderous sarcasm, the William Shatner version of Common Peopleis far more bitter. And for that, I think I actually like it a little bit more than the original. Sure, I'll probably never run out to the dancefloor screaming like a 12 year old school girl for Shatner's version (and yes, sadly enough, I've done this for some songs...many apologies to the umpteen million womenfolks who've been inadvertantly trampled in my fly to the box for Placebo's Special K or 36 Degrees), I think it will win out over the much lighter, almost seductive tone of Jarvis's sing-a-long. I think Pulp's Dishes and A Little Soul are more on par with Shatner's take on CP.
I mean, is it just me, or are the lyrics a little bit bitter?:
( You will never understand How it feels to live your life With no meaning or control And with nowhere left to go You are amazed that they exist And they burn so bright whilst you can only wonder why. )
Don't know why. Just felt a little bit like a dog lying in a corner this afternoon.
