Translating The Lost.
Oct. 5th, 2003 02:02 pmWent with Bri Bri, Janelle, and Dave, the furry Canadian to see Lost in Translation. What a GREAT movie. Not at all a fall out comedy, but it is funny, and charming, and well...quite real--and totally what I had expected.
It's more of a mood piece about being lost on the unfamiliar ground of love, and marriage, and growing old, and falling in love with something foreign, and new. It's kind of bittersweet really.
Yeah, the movie moves slow, and the plot is so simple as to not really be there, however; it is at once both profound, and full of thoughtful moments. The sights and sounds of Japan and the character's reaction to them (as well as the reactions to the *other* westerners) make for a surreal...ah hell...it's touching to the right people, and not everyone will appreciate or get it, but if you do, it's damn good.
It's swingers as a Fall/Spring romance set in Japan. Got it? Good. Lots of neat silent moments mixed with laughs, and somber stares.
It's good.
And somewhere in there last night of watching that I connected far too well with it. But I like some of the advice that's in there. You'll figure out what it is that you're supposed to be doing. Sooner or later. And sometimes, later than sooner.
And it makes me want to visit Japan. And rent a Kareoke room and get loaded while singing over the city.
Needed to talk to someone. Needed to walk. But instead, since I live in LA, I drove around some, and listened to Sammy Davis, Jr. Crusing, trying to get Lost in Los Angeles, but unfortunately, I was low on gas, and in too familiar territory. Again.
I need to stop being lost. Plan...must stick to the plan...
