"You'll have time..."
Oct. 18th, 2004 08:57 pmSo things are happening, and that's good, because this lets me freak out less. Still freaking, but not as much.
So, not as though I don't have *enough* music, I decided for some strange reason to de-freak by spending yet more money that I can't afford and bought another CD (I just stay away from the books. Too, too dangerous. Amazon knows what I want very well, and AH CRAP! I'm winning on ebay too...shhhheeeeeeeet...damn you out of print Graphic Novels...)
Anyrate, picked up William Shatner's Has Been. It's very surprisingly good. Personal. Self effacing. Beautiful and dark. And, well, it's Ben Fold's arrangement, producing, etc. But Captain Kirk actually penned all his own stuff. Bill asked Ben: "Ben, what do I write?" Ben replied "Just tell the truth." And so he does. Death, fear, regrets...both light and dark. It's gorgeous. Lemme drop some on you:
I was crossing the snowfields in front of the
Capitol Building
It was Christmas and I was alone
Strange City
Strangers for friends
And I was Broke
As the carillon sang its song, I dreamt of success
I would be the best
I would make my folks proud
I would be happy
It hasn't happened yet
...snip...
People come up and say hello
Okay, I can get to the front of the line
But you have to ignore the looks and yet
I'm waiting for that feeling of contentment
That ease at night when you put your head down
and the rehythms slow to sleep
My head sways and eyes start awake
I am there not halfway between sleep and death
but looking into eyes wide open
Trying to remember
What I might have done
Should have done
At my age I need serenity
I need peace
It hasn't happened yet
Amazing fucking stuff. I'm not even halfway through this thing, and I'm in love with it. Hell, the cover that he and Joe Jackson lay down of "Common People" is worth the price of admission.
Now I just have to go and do the same thing four more times for The People's Dance Party before Liz kills me. And she will kill me. With beautiful, beautiful biting sarcasm. And evil eye vengence.
( Look. A meme. Ain't done one of these in a while, huh? )
